What: Sustainability Week Tree Planting. We will be planting approximately 50 native hardwood trees on the site. The trees are in small containers.

When: Thursday, October 15, 1 p.m.

Where: Corner of Kent Street and Washington Street behind Miles Hall.

Significance of this event: This planting supports the Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment and Sustainability Plan and its goals for tree planting and reforestation, supports carbon sequestration, improves stormwater infiltration, reduces fossil fuel usage, while helping to beautify the campus. The goal is for the site to be converted from meadow/ lawn to forest as the trees mature. Come on out and have fun!

Who is participating: Dr. Eric Wiseman and the Urban Forestry Club will lead student groups planting the trees. You can join up with your friends to plant trees under the direction of the Forestry Club leaders.

How can I help and what should I bring? Come to plant. Bring proper shoes for planting and gardening gloves if desired. All other tools will be provided. For more information, contact Matt Gart at 540-231-4186 or gartm@vt.edu.

On October 12th, Virginia Tech’s SGA is teaming up with the President’s Office to give about 250 students the opportunity to meet and mingle with President Steger. He has decided to personally pay for all of their tickets, popcorns, and drinks for the 7 p.m. showing of the movie, No Impact Man.

After the movie is over, Brandon Carroll from the SGA is going to facilitate a Q&A. just for the sake of time, Brandon is going to be filtering questions (in order to maximize Steger’s time). So, if you have any questions for President Steger, please send an e-mail to Brandon at sga@vt.edu If you are interested in going, please let him know.

This is your time to ask him any questions whatsoever about Virginia Tech, courtesy of the Student Government Association.

Sustainable Blacksburg, in partnership with Virginia Tech and the Town of Blacksburg, is issuing a friendly call to action for all Blacksburg residents. As Sustainability Week approaches (October 11-17), the community is encouraged to read Ecological Intelligence by Daniel Goleman. Goleman’s book, the companion to Emotional Intelligence and Primal Leadership, explores the hidden environmental consequences of what we make and buy. It further demonstrates how new market forces drive the essential changes we must all make to save the planet.

Ecological Intelligence draws on cutting-edge research to reveal why “green is a mirage.” It illuminates inconsistencies in our response to the ecological crisis, and introduces new technologies that reveal with “radical transparency” the eco-impact of products we buy.

For ten years, Virginia Tech has been selecting a “Common Book” for all entering freshmen to read. This year, the chosen book is Ecological Intelligence. “This is a wonderful opportunity for us to gather as a community and make this a common reading experience for everyone,” said Blacksburg Vice Mayor and Sustainable Blacksburg Board Member Leslie Hager Smith.

To kick off Sustainability Week, Daniel Goleman will be in Blacksburg to deliver a keynote address on Sunday, October 11. The next day, there will be opportunities for the community to interact with Mr. Goleman further, through author signings, book discussions, small group assemblies, and other gatherings.

Copies of Ecological Intelligence are available through all branches of the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library; Tech Bookstore on Main St.; Easy Chair and Volume Two bookstores at the University Mall in Blacksburg; and online.

To learn more about Sustainability Week, visit www.vt.edu/sustainability
